Thorpe Top Treble Lock 7.9 miles

A trip to Shireoaks into the industrial area west of Worksop. David led the walk which took in the Chesterfield canal (Cuckoo Dyke) and the ancient Anston Stones Wood, a site of special scientific interest. This limestone woodland is home to a very pretty gorge created in the last glacial period. It is the location of Dead Man’s Hole. This was excavated in the 1960’s and revealed ancient flint tools and bones from the ice age.

WEDNESDAY 11th March

Walesby Round 6 miles

Well, Done Judith for leading your first walk for us. We left Walesby and headed initially across to Robin Hoods Way which took us eventually to the River Maun dodging the “Muck Spreading” on the way. A coffee stop at Robin Hoods cave by the river and then through Boughton Brake Woods to Kirton. The churchyard at Kirton turned out to be a good lunch stop. The final section back to Walesby was somewhat muddy in parts but did not detract from the enjoyment of the walk

Retford Grove Little Gringley 6.5 miles

Somewhat further away than our normal Wednesday walks but well supported never the less. Tony led the group and left this report

Meeting at the "vast" Lay-by next to the Hop Pole pub, Retford we crossed the road to get onto the Cuckoo Way foot path which follows the Chesterfield Canal. The water level was very high.  After about 1 mile we left the canal and followed tracks and field paths to Grove. Had lunch break in church grounds.   Our route then went onto Little Gringley and  then to Welham. At Welham we then took "shady lane” back to our cars at the Lay-by.  The weather was fine, with sunny spells on and off.
