Long Bennington, Elston and Thoresby

SUNDAY 5th October

Long Bennington 7 miles

Maggie led a small group of brave walkers willing to face the strong wind. The tail end of Storm Annie. After exploring some of the outskirts of Long Bennington, the route took them to Westborough, where they saw the historic church dating from the 13th century and a Lancaster aircraft crash site memorial. After a coffee stop in the village, they made their way to Dry Doddington, famous for its church with a leaning tower and spire. After a lunch stop they returned to Long Bennington following the meandering, River Witham.

Elston 5 miles

Thanks to Maggie for leading another walk so soon. She took 18 happy walkers around Elston and then a 3 mile anti clockwise route to Syerston where they stopped for coffee. They returned on a shorter route back to Elston

Thoresby Vale Country Park Edwinstowe 5 miles

Anne led a group of fifteen of us on an interesting walk round the new Thorsby Vale Country Park. The walk took us through Edwinstowe, onto the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and then up round the new park. It is still being developed but the view from the top were amazing. You could see Newark's sugar factory in one direction, Thorsby Hall in another and Lincoln Cathedral in yet another. We then walked down through the new Thorsby Vale village which is part of this development where traces of the industrial past when this was a colliery can still be seen.
A lovely, interesting walk in good company,
