Gunthorpe Burton Joyce 8 miles

Caroline led the walk, Steve had previously led, for the Sunday walkers. She reported:

“The sunshine had brought out 25 walkers and 4 dogs today, so we split into two groups for a lovely circular walk from Gunthorpe. I’d changed the route slightly from Steve’s to avoid any road walking and conditions were excellent all round.”

Sue M. said it was another lovely walk.

WEDNESDAY 12th March

Green Giants of Screveton 6 miles

Thanks to Steve for creating a route that was new to most of us. 27 walkers set off from the Royal Oak in Car Colston passing the Church and over the fields to Screveton. There was an interesting bug church on route. No coffee stop but an early lunch with the Geen Giants in the Eco Farm. On the return we stopped at the very interesting twelfth century St Wilfred’s Church. In the tower is a memorial to Sir Richard Whalley (d. 1583), his three wives and 25 children. Sir Richard rose to prominence at the Court of Henry VIII where he was lauded for 'the grace and skill which he displayed in the martial exercises of that age'. In other words, he was a good fighter.

Route added to the Library.

Teversal 7.4 miles

Sue and Carl led a group of 13 of us from the car park at Teversal along disused railway lines up to Hardwick Hall. Sue gave us a history lesson into the background of Bess of Hardwick and how she came into her great wealth. Hardwick Hall and Hardwick old hall absolutely looked stunning and seem well worth a return visit. The weather forecast had been really terrible but we hardly got wet at all.
