Lincoln, Vicar Water and Belton Park

SUNDAY 19th January

A Walk from South Lincoln 9.5 miles

Chris led the walk from Boultham Park initially heading down the Witham and past Bargate Sluice up the Catcthwater drain. They continued onto the South Common eventually climbing up on to the Lincoln Edge. Here there were good views of the city and its cathedral which would have been better on a fine day. Walking along Lincoln Edge they had views over to the Trent valley. The return was via Bracebridge Heath and back onto the Witham Valley before crossing Boultham Park back to the start.

WEDNESDAY 22nd January

Vicar Water 5 miles

Carol took a small group on a repeat trip to Vicar Water. A beautiful winter walk around what was the old Clipstone Colliery. Now a nature park with a lake and attendant ducks There are good footpaths through the trees, much valued in this wet season. A misty day in parts but a pleasant leisurely walk.

Belton Park 6 miles

Thanks to Peter for organising this walk with the National Trust. A large group of us took this circular walk around Belton House Estate and Londonthorpe.  There were some fantastic vistas despite the misty weather. We walked through open areas of woodland pastures, passing ancient trees and an historic deer herd. National Trust Ranger John Beirne led the way across the estate telling us many stories from the past and details of some of the wildlife.  The morning coffee stop was at Londonthorpe Church where Donna provided us with drinks and her famous cakes. Much appreciated by all and providing a welcome addition to church funds. The Church has many war graves some associated with the army camp that was set up on the estate during the first world war. The walk included some steep ascents and descents (total ascents 500+ feet) and took us into areas of the estate not generally open to visitors. Unfortunately, the weather closed in after our coffee break somewhat reducing the horizon. A good, interesting walk enjoyed by all.
