Cotgrave Country Park 5.5 miles
Maggie finally managed to start off the year albeit the proposed route was very much affected by the Grantham canal overflowing. Some pathways were flooded and then iced over, due to the low temperatures. A good walk around the country park which was the site of the old Cotgrave Colliery

WEDNESDAY 15th January
Kingsmill Mansfield 6 miles
Sue led a group of 23 of us on an interesting walk from King's Mill nature reserve to Tichfield Park in Mansfield. Although this walk was on the edges of a town and went through a landscape that has been used by industry for many years it was surprisingly rural with a great mix of industrial architecture and green spaces. Sue had lots of interesting facts about the history of the area which made the walk even more special. As always it was great to be out and about with the Newark Ramblers.

Bestwood Country Park 8 miles
A cold misty morning as we set off with Bob from the Bestwood Lodge Drive car park. Bestwood Lodge was a former Army base from the start of World War 2 up until the seventies. It is now the HQ to Nottinghamshire Fire Service We headed down a very wet and muddy trackway to Goosedale via Killarney Park. A coffee stop amongst the chickens which seemed to like Dave’s biscuits! Then on a disused railway track to Mill Lakes. Our return to the car park took us initially past the pit headstock and winding house, which has been kept to commemorate the time when the site was home to Bestwood Colliery. After our lunch break, we struggled to the top of a steep incline pausing for a well-earned breather to admire a great view of the surrounding countryside, which was now in sunshine. The route continued through Big Wood and the Hotel gardens to our starting point. Six of our number had a refreshment stop in the Bestwood Lodge Hotel at the end of the walk.
