Orchid Walk Southwell  5.5 miles

The Potwell Dyke Grasslands are the last remaining remnants of the Archbishop of York’s deer park and hunting ground. Owned by the Southwell Minster Chapter they comprise mainly hay and wet meadow with smaller areas of marsh, ponds and semi-improved grassland, divided by ancient hedges and bordered in part by the Potwell Dyke. At this time of the year  you will see the beautiful spring flowers in the meadow which is opened for public viewing. This year Judy led this annual favourite around the Minster town of Southwell taking in the grasslands hoping to see the very rare bee orchid. Plenty of Pyramidal orchids and Buttercups but the bee orchid was not spotted.

Cresswell Crags and Welbeck Estate 7.2 miles

Thanks to Bob for leading the walk who commented as follows:

After leaving the Dukeries Garden Centre 16 walkers headed for Cresswell Crags and did a circular walk around the Craggs in pleasant weather conditions. We then walked to the small but picturesque village of Belph before making our way over fields to the Welbeck Estate where lunch was taken by South Lodge. You could just see the turrets of the Welbeck Abbey. Our return to the garden centre took us over the “Skylight Tunnels” on the Robin Hood Way. The tunnels were built by The Duke of Portland in the early 19th Century, enabling un-detected to ride horse back to Worksop train station and commute to London by train!
