Newark and Balderton Circular 6.5 mile

An urban walk starting at the Sconce and Devon Park. The walk route included Balderton Lake, Newark Cemetery, the Castle and the river Trent.

SUNDAY 7h JULY

Stately home, Viaduct and Robin Hood. 8.5 miles

The group left the start point at Strelley Hall following the scenic Robinette’s Lane to get to the Nottingham Canal. They then followed the canal towpath and the Erewash trail to reach the famous Bennerley Viaduct. An impressive site!. There was then a gradual ascent through housing until reaching the now disused British rail line. A good path eventually led into the Robin Hood way which took them back to their starting point. Thanks to Judith and Peter for an interesting walk.

WEDNESDAY 10th JULY

Collingham

Colin led a group of 22 of us on a delightful walk around Collingham. A lot of it was on old Roman roads  and through pleasant woodland. As always a great chance to meet and chat to a great bunch of people.

Bingham, Scarrington and Car Colston 7.3 miles

Maggie led the group from Bingham on a circular route, with the first stop in Scarrington.  It is famous for its 'horseshoe pile'. It took the village blacksmith George Flinders twenty years to assemble his colossal stack of horseshoes. It attracted so much attention that he sold it to an American collector. The villages did not want him to do that, so Notts County Council stepped in and bought it. (Horseshoe stack). The route continued, passing through Screveton churchyard and Car Colston (including 'St Mary's Bug Church').
