Norwell, Edwinstowe and Eakring

Around Norwell 6.5 miles

Izzy lead 27 of us on a very pleasant walk from Norwell across the fields, through woods and up a hill and down to just before Bathley. We then returned through more woodland and fields. Some great views on the way of Lincoln Cathedral, Newark Parish Church and the sugar factory. As always a delight to be out in the company of such a nice bunch of people as Newark Ramblers.

Edwinstowe 9.4 miles

Ann led us from the Sherwood Forest Visitor centre skirting the southern end of the forest before we passed Archway House. Begun in 1842, Archway House was originally intended to be the first of 20 identical structures (or lodges) to be constructed on the Duke of Portland's estate at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire. In the event, only this single example was ever built, and it survives today, beautifully conserved. We continued on until we reached the River Maun for a coffee stop. Following the river for a while we then headed for Rufford Abbey, stopping in the rose garden for lunch. Our return into Edwinstowe followed the old railway line passing the signal box for Thoresby Colliery Junction. Thoresby Colliery was a deep coal mine on the outskirts of Edwinstowe village. The mine, which opened in 1925, was the last working colliery in Nottinghamshire when it closed in 2015. An interesting walk on a cold day.
